5 Common Painting Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Ever finished a paint job and thought, "That doesn't look right"?
Streaky walls. Visible brush marks. Drips. Peeling.
Most painting problems come from the same handful of mistakes. Here's what they are and how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Skipping the Prep
It's tempting to dive straight into painting. But skipping prep is the #1 reason paint jobs fail.
Dust on walls stops paint from sticking. Holes show through. Untaped edges get messy.
Fix: Wipe down walls. Fill holes and sand smooth. Tape edges carefully. Yes, it takes time. No, you can't skip it.
Mistake #2: Using Cheap Brushes
That $3 brush from the bargain bin? It's going to shed bristles into your paint. It won't hold an edge. It'll leave streaks. And it'll be trash after one use.
Fix: Use a quality brush with dense bristles that spring back when bent. Even better—get a refillable brush so you can swap in fresh bristles when they wear out. The bristles are what do the work. Keep the handle, replace the bristles.
Mistake #3: Overloading the Brush
More paint on the brush means fewer trips to the tray, right? Wrong.
Overloading causes drips, runs, and makes it hard to cut clean lines.
Fix: Dip the brush about one-third up the bristles. Tap off the excess. You want enough to work with, not so much it's dripping.
Mistake #4: Not Keeping a Wet Edge
See those visible lines where one section meets another? Those are lap marks. They happen when you paint over something that's already started to dry.
Fix: Work in sections. Always blend into wet paint. If you cut in along the ceiling, roll that section before it dries. Don't stop mid-wall.
Mistake #5: Only Doing One Coat
One coat might look okay wet. When it dries, you'll see thin spots, streaks, and uneven coverage.
Fix: Plan for two coats. Let the first dry completely. The second coat fills in thin spots and makes the color pop.
